Molasses Cookie Cutouts

When I make these cookies, I know the holiday season has arrived! The smell coming from the oven while the cookies are baking fills our home with the aroma of molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.  These are my youngest sons favorite cookie.  I’ve been making them since 1973 when I first saw them in Family Circle Christmas Helps magazine.  You will see I’ve made lots of my cookies from this magazine alone.  You can cut them in any shape you like, but I love the Gingerbread men and Gingerbread ladies best!


3 and 3/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 Tablespoons Cocoa

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon

2 teaspoons ground cloves

1 cup butter (2 sticks) softened

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1/2 cup molasses


Sift flour, soda, salt, cocoa, ginger, cinnamon and cloves into a large bowl and set aside.

Beat butter until light and fluffy (a light yellow color), and slowly add sugar a little at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Add egg and molasses and beat well.

Stir in flour mixture and mix well.

Wrap in plastic wrap or foil several hours or overnight.

Roll out portions on a floured board and cut in shapes.

Bake 350 for 8 minutes.

Remove to a wire rack and let cool completely.

Decorate or leave plain.
